Porto 2024 Convention Highlights
The EASA EAA Chapter’s 2024 convention took place in Porto from October 3rd to 5th, gathering 158 participants from 84 companies across 28 countries at the Hilton Porto Gaia Hotel. This year’s event fostered a collaborative atmosphere where members shared insights and addressed common challenges.
The convention opened with an overview of our strategic objectives, setting the stage for high-impact discussions. Our President, Edwin den Breejen, led a session titled “Stronger Together, Shaping the Future,” preparing participants for collaborative workshops focused on addressing industry challenges and brainstorming potential projects for collaboration.
We were honored to have Paul Rossiter, Chairman of the EASA Board, highlight the importance of strong leadership and collaboration in securing a prosperous future for our industry.
Following his address, Wim Vancauwenberghe from the Belgian Maintenance Association discussed the critical role of maintenance and asset management in achieving Europe’s energy efficiency and emission reduction goals. Fernando Nuño from the International Copper Association Europe then introduced the Copper Sector Environmental Roadmap, emphasizing the industry’s role in meeting carbon reduction mandates.
Another highlight of the convention was the launch of “Reimagining Engineering: Be Part of the Change,” a video campaign led by the Apprenticeship Committee. This campaign captures our mission to attract new talent and empower the next generation of professionals to make their mark in our industry. This initiative is particularly vital as we seek to innovate and inspire future leaders.
Martijn Stauthamer discussed CMR Classified Chemicals, emphasizing safety challenges in motor production and repair.
The discussions continued with Marie-Claude Rasendra (Megger France) and Krista DeSocio (ICC International) addressing talent retention. They explored how HR and Marketing can align to attract and retain top talent, which is essential for ensuring our industry’s continued growth and success.
Following that, John Zuleger and Michael Mitten o presented on how private equity ownership models drive value. Their insights provided a unique perspective on the financial aspects of our industry and the strategies that can foster stability and growth.
Dr. Martin Killeen, one of our top experts and a leading trainer for the EASA EX Training Program, tackled common issues in the repair of Ex Electrical Rotating Machines. His insights sparked engaging conversations and highlighted best practices within our field.
The convention also featured a technical presentation from Bram Vervisch on turbine diagnostics, emphasizing proactive strategies for tackling wind turbine issues through Periodic Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA).
Finally, Louise van Schaik from The Clingendael Institute delivered a keynote address on “Maintenance of Electric Apparatus as a Strategic Asset for Europe,” analyzing Europe’s vulnerabilities and the need for resilience in a dynamic geopolitical landscape. Her presentation underscored the importance of strategic planning in our industry.
A significant highlight of the convention was the presentation of the 2024 EASA Karsten Moholt Exceptional Achievement Award to Jan Pötter from EMZ in Germany. We were also honored to present the EASA EAA Lifetime Achievement Award to John Allen in recognition of his outstanding service as Vice President, President, Trainer, and global expert. John is regarded as a legend in the industry, and this award is a testament to his dedication, leadership, and significant contributions. In addition, a surprise award was presented to our General Manager, Frederic Beghain, for his ten years of service, reflecting our appreciation for his invaluable leadership and commitment.
